About Mensa
History of Mensa

Mensa was founded in England in 1946 by Roland Berrill, a barrister, and Dr. Lance
Ware, a scientist and lawyer. They had the idea of forming a society for bright people,
the only qualification for membership of which was a high IQ. The original aims were,
as they are today, to create a society that is non-political and free from all racial or
religious distinctions.

History of Malaysian Mensa

Tan Sri Dato' Yong Poh Kon became the Founding Chairman when he registered the
Malaysian Mensa Society on 22 May 1984 after several years of effort.  Members prior
to that were only direct members of Mensa International. Establishing a national
Mensa would also allow greater flexibility in organising activities and events as well as
allow a large portion of funding to be channelled locally.

Purposes of Mensa

  • to identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity,
  • to encourage research in the nature, characteristics and uses of intelligence,
  • to promote stimulating intellectual and social opportunities for its members.

Policy

  1. The Society has no aim which is to the disadvantage of the general community.
  2. Members or groups of members may express opinions, but the Society as a
whole has no opinion. No opinion shall be expressed as being that of the
    Society.
  3. The Society shall take no political action other than the publication of the results
    of its investigations.
  4. The Society shall not have any ideological, philosophical, religious or political
    affiliations.
  5. Any member may organise any group of members or any other legitimate
activity in the Society, but no member may commit the Society to anything.
  6. The Society is not a profit-making body.
